Berlin: the Brandenburg gate.  This famous structure (now being renovated, it will never again look exactly like it does in this photo, and now the road is open to cars) was right smack in the middle of no man's land, the area of the Berlin wall.  This was the symbolic border between East and West, where JFK said "ich bin ein Berliner," and Ronald Reagan said "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."  The films of people celebrating on November 9, 1989 are mostly from the western side of this famous gate.

The Red Army of the Soviet Union lost 20 million in World War II, an unbelievable death toll.  This memorial in formerly West Berlin is dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who died in the war.  Many are buried underneath.  During the Cold War it was guarded by Soviet soldiers, now its a memorial that evokes memories of both the Cold War and WWII.
