| Yet more construction. I took a number of photos in the summer of 1995 of what really were typical sights in former East Germany: construction everywhere. |

| I believe this next photo is of the Friedrichstrasse in Berlin, what now has become the ritzy shopping section not far from Potsdamer Platz. I still am in awe of how much the city has changed. I first visited Berlin in the summer of 1989, three months before the wall came down. I walked down this street and through much of the city center, and at that time it was a quiet and except for the historical buildings rather dreary area. It is amazing how fast the city has changed. I managed to visit in 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2001. Each time I marveled at how quickly the center of the city was transformed. But in most of the eastern part of Germany and outside the city center in Berlin the buildings and streets look much the same as before, though new shops, renovations (especially interiors -- even if the outside of many buildings look the same, the inside has usually been remodeled) and other projects continue. |
